Empowering Vocational Education in Australia: ITECA Establishes Technical Reference Group for TAE Training Package

In a significant development for the vocational education sector, the Independent Tertiary Education Council Australia (ITECA) has successfully advocated for the establishment of a Technical Reference Group (TRG) dedicated to supporting Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) in adopting the TAE – Training and Education and FSK – Foundation Skills training packages. This milestone comes after intense lobbying by ITECA and recognition of the crucial need to provide guidance on technical issues faced by RTOs. Let’s delve into the key details.

A Step Towards Collaboration and Expertise

Recognising the importance of foundation skills training and the skills training sector, the Skills and Workforce Ministerial Council agreed to temporarily entrust the oversight of the training packages to the Australian Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR). However, this raised concerns among RTOs regarding the availability of technical guidance.

In response to these concerns, ITECA tirelessly engaged with various stakeholders, including TAFE Directors Australia, to build alliances and advocate for the creation of the Technical Reference Group. As a result, the government has established the TRG as an interim measure, empowering RTOs to stay informed about the latest developments through regular meetings of the ITECA Training & Assessment Interest Group.

A Trusted Chairperson

Andrew Shae, Chair of the ITECA Skills Training National Policy Committee, has been appointed by the Australian Government to lead the TRG. With his expertise and experience, he will steer the group toward developing effective strategies for the TAE and FSK training packages.

Collaboration for Quality Delivery

The TRG, comprising a small time-limited group of experts, will work closely with the DEWR to shape the future of VET. This collaboration provides an invaluable opportunity for RTOs, states, territories, and industry stakeholders to contribute their expertise, ensuring the delivery of high-quality training packages.

Looking Beyond the Technical Reference Group

While the establishment of the TRG marks a significant achievement, ITECA understands the need for long-term arrangements in the VET sector. Therefore, they will continue to actively collaborate with DEWR, state and territory governments, and other stakeholders to represent the interests of independent RTOs in broader skills reforms and new industry engagement initiatives.
